How to Choose the Right Paperboard Weight and Box Style for Luxury Packaging

Luxury packaging is judged before it is opened. The weight of the paperboard and the structure of the box decide whether a product feels premium or cheap in the customer's hands. This guide explains how to match board caliper and box style to your product, budget and brand promise.

Why paperboard weight decides the premium feel

Paperboard is measured in grams per square metre (gsm). Heavier board bends less, prints sharper and survives shipping; lighter board costs less and ships flat. For luxury work the sweet spot is usually 300-600 gsm wrapped board, or 800-1500 gsm greyboard for rigid boxes.

Rule of thumb: if the box must hold its shape unassisted on a shelf, choose rigid construction with 1000-1500 gsm greyboard. If it ships flat and is assembled at retail, 300-350 gsm folding carton board is enough.

Expert advice from our packaging engineers

  • Protect first, beautify second. A scuffed luxury box loses the sale; choose board thick enough to prevent transit damage.
  • Match the print to the board. Foil and spot UV read best on coated 300+ gsm board with a smooth surface.
  • Design for the shelf and the hand. A 9x9x4 cm rigid box feels substantial; the same product in thin board feels disposable.
  • Standardise sizes. Fewer box sizes lower tooling cost and speed reorders.

Standardised 4-step selection process

  1. Define the product's weight, dimensions and fragility.
  2. Pick the box style from the table above by unboxing goal and budget.
  3. Choose board weight: rigid 1000-1500 gsm, folding 300-350 gsm, eco 200-400 gsm.
  4. Send specifications for a free sample and firm quote before mass production.
